PARAGON: An Integrated Approach for Characterizing Aerosol Climate Impacts and Environmental Interactions

چکیده
OCTOBER 2004 AMERICAN METEOROLOGICAL SOCIETY | A erosols are airborne suspensions of tiny particles, each typically about one-thousandth the diameter of the period at the end of this sentence. Cumulatively, they have profound effects at a variety of scales, exerting myriad influences on the earth’s environment and climate and on human health. Many aerosols originate from natural sources—volcanoes, dust storms, forest and grassland fires, terrestrial and oceanic vegetation, and sea spray—whereas others arise from anthropogenic (human caused) sources. The sources of anthropogenic aerosols include the burning of fossil and biofuels— through industrial activities, transportation systems, and urban heating—along with land cover/land-use changes, for example, biomass burning, deforestation, and desertification. Scattering and absorption of sunlight leads to a “direct” radiative forcing of climate, which, when included in model calculations, results in improved agreement with observed temperature trends over the last century (Penner et al. 2001; PARAGON An Integrated Approach for Characterizing Aerosol Climate Impacts and Environmental Interactions

OCTOBER 2004 AMERICAN METEOROLOGICAL SOCIETY | T he Progressive Aerosol Retrieval and Assimilation Global Observing Network (PARAGON) concept (Diner et al. 2004) envisions a coordinated and systematic approach for dramatically improving our understanding of aerosol climate impacts and environmental interactions. Among its scientific motivations is the need to establish, with great confidence, t...
متن کاملGeneral overview: European Integrated project on Aerosol Cloud Climate and Air Quality interactions (EUCAARI) â•fi integrating aerosol research from nano to global scales
In this paper we describe and summarize the main achievements of the European Aerosol Cloud Climate and Air Quality Interactions project (EUCAARI). EUCAARI started on 1 January 2007 and ended on 31 December 2010 leaving a rich legacy including: (a) a comprehensive database with a year of observations of the physical, chemical and optical properties of aerosol particles over Europe, (b) comprehe...
متن کاملAn “A-Train” Strategy for Quantifying Direct Climate Forcing by Anthropogenic Aerosols
ing how anthropogenic aerosols impact the Earth’s climate system is a daunting challenge. Quantifying these impacts will require a multifaceted, global observing system and a capacity for integrating diverse data (Seinfeld et al. 1996; Heintzenberg et al. 1996; Charlson 2001). Over the past decades, as evidence of the importance of aerosol impacts has accumulated, major components of the requir...
متن کاملApplication of Driving force- Pressure- State- Impact- Response (DPSIR) framework for integrated environmental assessment of the climate change in city of Tehran
Climate change is a complicated issue with many factors playing role in its formation and distribution. Considering this complication, a comprehensive and holistic approach is needed for a better understanding and management of those factors. The causal frameworks are among systemic and integrated methods for addressing the causes of environmental problems and the relationships that exist betwe...
